Buses and tickets

Skopje public transport guide

Skopje has a bus network but no metro. Visitors can walk most central sights; buses become useful for residential districts, the transport centre and selected outer stops. The key is to set up payment before you board.

Quick answer

Download the official SkopjeBus app while you have data, create an account, buy the appropriate ticket with a bank card, then scan its QR code at the lower camera on the onboard validator. Check JSP announcements before a time-critical trip.

How ticketing works

Do not wait until the bus arrives to create an account or test payment. Set up the app at the hotel, buy only the product shown as suitable for your trip, and take a screenshot of the ticket instructions—not the QR code as a substitute for the live ticket.

Mobile
Buy in the SkopjeBus app after signing in; bank-card payment is supported.
On board
Open the purchased ticket and scan its QR code at the camera on the validator.
Smart card
Buy and load a reusable card at JSP service centres or listed resellers.
Offline
Already purchased app tickets can be validated offline; purchasing needs an internet connection.

Routes a visitor may actually need

  • Transport Centre to central Skopje: often walkable; use the official planner if luggage or weather makes a bus preferable.
  • Vodno: check the current route and the cable-car status separately; reaching the mid-mountain area does not mean the cable car operates.
  • Matka: verify the selected service, direction and return time in the official planner on the day.
  • City Park and outer neighbourhoods: search the exact destination, not an assumed route number copied from an old blog.

A reliable boarding routine

  • Confirm the stop name and direction in the app.
  • Arrive early enough to identify the correct side of the road.
  • Validate immediately after boarding and keep the ticket available for inspection.
  • Follow the live map, but also watch street names because diversions occur.
  • For the last useful return, leave a backup margin and keep licensed-taxi money.

When walking or a taxi is better

Old Bazaar, Stone Bridge, Macedonia Square and Macedonia Street form a compact walking area. A bus adds little between them. Use a licensed taxi when carrying luggage, arriving late, travelling as a group or when a missed connection would matter more than the fare.

Frequently asked

Can tourists buy Skopje bus tickets in an app?+

Yes. JSP says the SkopjeBus app sells tickets and passes after account sign-in and accepts debit or credit card payment.

Do app tickets work without mobile data?+

JSP says already purchased tickets can still be used offline, but a new purchase needs internet.

Can I tap my ordinary bank card on the city bus?+

JSP's current visitor instructions describe app QR tickets and JSP smart cards. Do not assume open-loop bank-card tapping; use a method JSP explicitly lists.

Are Skopje bus times reliable?+

Use the official planner and announcements, then keep margin for diversions or delays—especially for airports and intercity connections.
